In the design of a heat exchanger, there are many design parameters which influence each other in a complex way. As a consequence, heat exchangers are often overdimensioned. For our customer, Actiflow performed a CFD simulation to investigate if CFD can predict the heat exchange between the different media in an accurate way.
In the simulation, the airflow over the spiral, the heat flux through the spiral and the water flow inside the spiral were modeled. The temperature of the water was calculated based on a given temperature of the airflow and given properties of the spiral material. After comparison between the CFD results and several measurement data, it could be concluded that the steady CFD results showed good correlation with the measurement results.
As such, the customer was shown that CFD simulations can be used in the design of heat exchangers. The advantage is that many of the uncertainties can be eliminated in an early design stage.
