Through CFD, the multiphase flow through a working separator was simulated with the goal to generate ideas to increase the maximum capacity of the separator. The simulation involved the modeling of oil, gas and water. The difference in density between the different components allows them to stratify when moving slowly with gas on top, water on the bottom and oil in the middle.
Thanks to CFD, all relevant flow phenomena in the separator could be clearly visualised. Based on the visualisations, a number of possible improvements were listed and suggested to the customer.
