5MW wind turbine with active aerodynamics

As a spin-off of its normal activities, Actiflow has the constant aim to develop new innovations and to bring them to the market. The latest Actiflow innovation involves a new wind turbine blade concept, using active boundary layer control. This technology enables a weight and cost reduction of a blade by more than 15%.

For the development of the new blade concept, Actiflow already performed both theoretical studies and wind tunnel experiments to validate its ideas and designs. This R&D resulted in several patents.

In 2012, a new wind tunnel test will be performed, together with a material test to prove the durability of the concept. In a next phase, Actiflow will build 3 turbine blades of about 25 metres and test them in the field. It is expected that the new blade concept will be fully proven in 2014.
